I'm seeing that if we are to sell Diop we will target Malang Sarr of Nice.

Yup, saw that too. Presumably the principle is: buy a huge, young French CB for twenty odd million and double your money a year later.

The fact that you can double your money should tell the club how hard good CB's are to come by. We won't improve if we think that extra cash can replace a good player. What guarantee would we have we would get our next target? We would have to settle again.

To be fair, this is what I have wanted the club to do for years. Buy young, do well, identify a younger replacement in all areas and be prepared to only sell for huge amounts of money. Basically use the big clubs money to break the ceiling and catch up
Would prefer more Academy players coming through too.

Glen : so in your philosophy where does it stop?, so we buy cheap sell big, than buy cheap and sell big, and then what? How do we create a team and solidness keep chopping and changing.

Lets face it, the Prem is a monster out of control where fairness has nothing to do with it, the deeper the pockets the more successful you are, Leicester was a one off and will never happen again. Until the transfer rules change as in you can only spend a certain amount a season, unless you have oil coming out of your backside it will always be catch up. we will never reach a level of Manchester s, Liverpool and any other team unless you are a billionaire and in season to come you will prob need a multi billionaire and more importantly willing to invest

With us paying £20 odd mill for a player and maybe getting £50m back in a season, in comparison to the teams mentioned its small change, they will spend £50m as a routine squad player, that's how far they are ahead.

I say let all of these teams bugger off to a super league in Europe, get football back to what it should be with even regulations in money, it should be the best coach tactical awareness win matches, not having a billion pound worth of talent on the pitch that could probably win a game without any tactics at all.

Football is going in such a ugly direction, let's hope the Championship does not follow suit, but I can see it happening sooner rather than latter where billionaires will buy up championship sides to reach the promised land. Sorry chaps rant over, anyone fancy a pint?

We are a club with a limited budget looking to challenge for honours the fact that owners have come n said rice not sale Diop will go for silly money full credit to the players for not doing an Arnie . the bottom line we do need extra finances . the players they talking about moving would bring in 20-25 million most of that would come from Obiang n chicorito. So we would be looking to replace 2 strikers and maybe promote 2 half decent strikers will set us back 45-50 mill.

Its a merry go round bkk, we sould be pouring money into coaching the youth and developing them into top top players, its not instant sucesss and have to be patient but unless a multi billionaire comes in we will and always will be playing in a leauge within a leauge if that makes sense. I have said the only way to even out is to have a cap on how much a teams spend a season, this will distrbute the best players around the teams hence making it more even . This will never happen, so the only way is to protect the sport is to let all the big teams piss off to a super leauge and get football back in England into Division, 1234.

Warrington. Let me do the maths
20m outlay -20m
60m sale +40m
20m outlay x2 0m
60m sale x 2 +120m
20m outlay x2 +80m
60m sale x 2 +200m
It ain't rocket science, just a way of competing and breaking the ceiling. I think we are 2/ 3 years away from being regular Europa league so why not prepare for it? - if big european clubs come in our players would be daft not to leave if they are guaranteed first team footy.
We just need to play silly whilst selling and keep genuine talents like Rice for more than a season and the team will build itself.

{Ed001's Note - except that a 20m outlay on transfers costs in effect a lot more than 20m, it can cost many times that amount in signing fees, salary etc. For instance Rabiot's agent (his mother) is asking for a 10m fee for his transfer. Which is on top of the 10m signing fee he is demanding. And that is a 'free transfer'!

A 60m sale is the opposite, you don't get 60m. For starters 5% goes to the player. 5% goes to the clubs who developed him under a certain age (off the top of my head I think its 21 but I would need to check). So that's 10% ie 6m, gone already. That's before you get to agent's fees and solicitors, taxes etc. Best to steer clear of money talk because there is so much that you and I will never see and often prices quoted are wildly inaccurate as the selling club will say the highest possible price if all kinds of clauses are met while the buying club will give out the lowest possible fee.}

Ps. Think you are right regarding a super league. Maybe then we may get some sense back into the league. Until then I can only hope (and try to emulate the Southampton model but with more resource ;-) )

Ruddy heck Ed, that's a lot more complicated than I thought.
I knew the players 'fees' but 10m to a players Mum? that's like buying the caravan in snatch!
Any idea (at a simple level) how Southampton managed to do so well with transfers?

{Ed001's Note - I very much simplified it as well, but it was just to give you the idea of how much can end up actually being paid out. It doesn't help that payments are usually done over a period of time, so it is difficult to keep track of how much a player actually costs in total.

Southampton had an excellent recruitment system added to one of the best academies in the game. Because their academy produced such a large number of players, in comparison to others, they were able to be more picky about who they signed. They weren't left with 8 holes to fill each season as they had 4 or 5 youngsters to fill most of the gaps. It is much easier to get transfers right if you can focus your recruitment on finding just a couple of players.}

Cheers Ed. Thank you for the input.
Seems as though I may have played too much football manager as a youth.

{Ed001's Note - me too, thankfully Ed002 has been educating me over the years.}

I was going to say ED hasn't out layed everything cost wise but most of it which I wasn't aware of either it's ridiculous gone are the days if a simple transfer it's go so complex thank gOD for ED yiu are the best fella. COYI.

{Ed002's Note - It might be an apt time to explain again about the cost of transfers (excluding wages). What is paid by the buying club would typically include:

(a) Transfer fee - the big number.
(b) Any levy applied by the local FA – 5% for the Premier League.
(c) Tax due on the transfer fee – typically this will be VAT (at varying rates across Europe) some or all of which should be reclaimable.
(d) Agent fees – this may be to one or more agents (as an example, Liverpool have spent £44M plus VAT on agent fees (nearly double the next highest) last season alone).
(e) Tax due on the agent fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the agent bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(f) Intermediary fees – this may be to one or more sponging leeches (what do you mean you have a super agent?) .
(g) Tax due on the Intermediary fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the Intermediary bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(h) Signing on fee to the player (possibly including non-reclaimable VAT if the player is VAT registered).
(i) Legal fees.
(j) VAT on legal fees which is reclaimable.
(k) Moving/relocation costs for the player.
(l) VAT on moving/relocation costs which is reclaimable.
(m) Solidarity and Traing Contribututions (see below).
(n) Paying up insurance costs to the selling club (usually waived).

What is paid by the selling club would typically include:

(a) If the player is under 24 and moving between different football associations, a Solidarity contribution paid to his previous clubs responsible for his training - this is 5% of the transfer fee received (apportioned 5% of the contribution for each year from the season of his 12th birthday to the season of his 15th birthday and 10% of the contribution for each season from his 16th to 23rd birthdays). This is generally (there are exceptions) recoverable from the buying club but responsibility (that is meant to be with the buying club) can be assigned to the selling club.
(b) If the player moves to a higher category club (all clubs being categorised 1 to 4) then Training Compensation is due for the period of age 12 to 21. Compensation is due to all clubs when the player turns from amateur to professional and thereafter only when he moves from his final training club to another club. The initial training compensation is levied at the training costs associated with Category 4 clubs. The subsequent figure is agreed between the sides or tribuneral if necessary. This is generally (there are exceptions) recoverable from the buying club but responsibility (that is meant to be with the buying club) can be assigned to the selling club.
(c) Any monies owed to the player if he did not request a transfer – again this is 5% of the transfer fee received.
(d) Any monies owed to the player in terms of his contract (typically outstanding owed wages (not future wages) and bonuses).
(e) Any money contractually due to a previous club as the result of a sell-on clause.}
