Oh I totally agree. I meant if they can get it done with the contract terms they are attempting to sign Rice up to then I’m all for it. As in a lower base wage then performance and appearance bonuses. They cannot keep giving these older players a massive payday as it has a negative effect on the mentality of the side, which I’m sure we all know is a huge problem as it is.

Considering the policy that IronMike has suggested we are planning to adopt I find this to be a non-runner. If they can make it work with these contract terms in place then well done, it doesn’t hurt to ask after all. But, even getting shot of Carroll I don’t see them changing a policy for one footballer to the detriment of the rest of the squad’s morale.

Unfortunately neither of these are defensive midfielders and I think everyone can see that this is what the side desperately needs. Whilst I’m not exactly a football expert I have been following football long enough to know that you cannot just ship goals and in the modern game a defensive midfielder is a pivotal role. One which we have failed to fill for a number of seasons now. We can score goals, that is obvious, our problems lie in conceding and new centre backs are not solely the answer.

It’s a combination of the two.

I agree with you and I don’t expect a challenge for Europe. We bought players with no experience of the league, which is vital. This year is about acclimatising those players, hopefully they get the hang of it and then a few tweeks next year. But we will be ok because so many other teams are either in the same boat as us, (Fulham, Wolves, Everton) or are just generally going to struggle (Cardiff, Huddersfield, Southampton) .

The problems lie deeper than just picking the correct 11. There is a fundamental issue with mentality at West Ham and this cannot be overcome in an instant. We clearly haven’t moved the players on that we would like and this has effected things.

To just write off Pellegrini after one game is a bit silly. He’s no person and will eventually get it right.

There are many decisions he made that I wouldn’t. But I’m a plumber and he’s a manager of a football club, so what do I know?

{Ed002's Note - I really don't think the club bought well in the summer. It will be a tougher season than you all seem to expect.}

Wether he is a good defender or not isn’t really my point. I haven’t seen much of him previously but you would think that the experts charged with running the team are aware of his strengths and weaknesses. If he can’t defend then don’t put Antonio in front of him.

I’m certainly not one for knee jerk reactions and I have already said that we would struggle against Liverpool at home. I try to look for pros and cons I’m each. The cons are numerous; mentality is poor, midfield is just lacking, opportunities weren’t created in abundance. Pros; zero.

But to judge us on one game against a top top side would be naive. Let us see in 2 months. The midfield issue is massive but hopefully Pellegrini has a solution for this. I’m certainly not worried just yet. It wasn’t great to watch and I think Antonio in particular should be nowhere near the side but my optniom means absolutey nothing.

Let’s all just relax, to judge week to week is ridiculous.

I think you are being harsh on Fredericks. Antonio left him exposed far too much and one man cannot defend against two.

The best thing for West Ham now is for nobody to panic and we just go again next week. Pellegrini was never going to change the mentality over night and from that performance and the goals conceded we can see that the mentality within the team is poor.

{Ed001's Note - Fredericks is not a good defender. Players were overrunning him in the Championship too. Teams will exploit you down that flank every time he plays.}
